Comparing properly

Four figures, and only four

The market is full of flattering spec sheets that cannot be compared with one another. Here is what to look at — and what to ignore.

Be wary of the "total power" in watts shown on marketplaces: it adds up the consumption of the LED, not the light that reaches your skin. A "1000 W" panel may deliver less than a well-designed "300 W" one.

The actual wavelengths

Ideally red (630–670 nm) and near-infrared (810–850 nm). A serious device states its precise peaks, not "red and IR".

Irradiance at the usage distance

In mW/cm², measured at 15 or 30 cm — and not at contact, which artificially inflates the figure. It is what determines the length of your sessions.

The usable area

The zone actually lit at a useful intensity. A large panel whose edges fall away is no better than a small, even panel.

Flicker and noise

A quality power supply does not flicker and does not whine. It is invisible on a spec sheet, but it is what makes a device get used — or left in a cupboard.
